Description:
The Armenian periodical Khatabala, appearing in Tiflis (Tbilisi) with interruptions during the first three decades of the 20th century, like its Azerbaijani analogue Mollah Nasreddin, was an important outlet of social and political grievances, transcending, oftentimes, narrow ethnic concerns. Khatabala’s caricatures periodically turned to ruins as motif and theme, and at times explicitly engaged with the ruined city of Ani to raise incisive questions about social mores, cultural shifts, and political processes. In doing so, the periodical’s treatment of Ani markedly differs from the admiration that it tended to generate otherwise.
