Gevorg Bashinjaghian’s Oil Paintings of the Ruins of Ani Gevorg Bashinjaghian (1857-1925) was born in the Georgian town of Sighnaghi in the Kakheti province. From 1878 to 1883, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. Bashinjaghian traveled extensively in the Caucasus and Europe, settled in Tiflis and exhibited work across the Russian Empire. From 1899 to 1901, he lived in Paris, where he continued painting. Bashinjaghian began working on a series of works depicting the ruins of Ani towards the end of the 19th century.

The Holy Savior Church from the southwest, 1910, Gevorg Bashinjaghian, History Museum of Armenia, Yerevan. The church was built by lord Ablgharib Pahlavuni to safekeep a relic from the Holy Cross acquired during his visit to Constantinople. The construction of the church was completed in 1035-1036. The dome was reconstructed in 1192 and repaired in 1342. The eastern half of the church was destroyed by a strom in 1957.

The Ani Cathedral from the southwest, the ruins of the Chapel of St. Hripsime Virgins, the Holy Savior Church, Gevorg Bashinjaghian, History Museum of Armenia, Yerevan. The construction of the Ani Cathedral began during the reign of King Smbat II (r. 977-989) around 985-989 and was completed in 992-1001 by Queen Katramide, the wife of King Gagik I. The architect was Trdat, who also built the Church of St. Gregory (Gagkashen) in Ani and repaired Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. During the 1010s, next to the Ani Cathedral, Sargis I of Sevan (992-1019) built the Chapel-martyrium of the St. Hripsime Virgins.
